How to Self-Publish a Book in the UK: Costs, ISBNs and Distribution

The UK route step by step: Nielsen ISBNs, legal deposit, KDP and IngramSpark distribution, and what each stage realistically costs a first-time author.

To self-publish in the UK you need five things: an edited manuscript, a cover, print-ready and ePUB files, an ISBN if you want to sell beyond Amazon, and a distribution channel, usually Amazon KDP, IngramSpark or both. UK ISBNs come from Nielsen, ebooks are zero-rated for VAT, and printed books must be legally deposited with the British Library.

The process is the same craft as anywhere else, with three UK-specific wrinkles: the ISBN agency, legal deposit, and B-format as the default paperback size. Here is the whole route in order.

The six steps

UK self-publishing, start to finish 1. Editcritique + copyedit 2. CoverB-format friendly 3. Filesprint PDF + ePUB 4. ISBNNielsen (UK) 5. UploadKDP / IngramSpark 6. DepositBritish Library Steps 1–3 are production and quality. Steps 4–6 are UK administration. Only the files decide whether stores accept the book.
The order matters: ISBN metadata should exist before upload, and legal deposit follows publication.

The UK specifics

ISBN. In the UK, ISBNs are sold by Nielsen, individually or in blocks of ten, and a block is markedly cheaper per number. Amazon will publish without one (it assigns its own ASIN), but bookshops, libraries and IngramSpark's wider network require a proper ISBN with your name as publisher. The mechanics are explained in Librum's glossary and in the journal guide How to self-publish a book in the UK.

Legal deposit. UK law requires one copy of every published printed book to be sent to the British Library within a month of publication, with five further libraries able to request copies. It is a legal obligation, but also free national archiving.

VAT. Since May 2020 ebooks are zero-rated in the UK, like printed books, so pricing no longer needs to absorb a VAT difference between formats.

Distribution: Amazon only, or wider?

KDP alone covers Amazon UK and its international stores, which is where most self-published sales happen. Add IngramSpark if you want UK bookshops and libraries to be able to order the book through their normal wholesale channels. The trade-offs are covered in KDP vs IngramSpark: which should authors choose, and the full production logic in Librum's pillar guide How to self-publish a book.

Librum prepares UK-ready books end to end: B-format interiors, store-validated ePUB and covers, with a fixed quote in 24 hours. See self-publishing packages

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an ISBN to self-publish in the UK?

Not for Amazon alone, since KDP assigns its own identifier for the Kindle store and its print listings. You do need a Nielsen ISBN the moment you want bookshops, libraries or IngramSpark's wholesale network to carry the book, and it lists you as the publisher of record.

What is legal deposit and does it apply to self-publishers?

Legal deposit is the UK requirement to send one copy of every published printed book to the British Library within a month of publication. It applies to self-publishers exactly as it does to publishing houses, and five further deposit libraries may request additional copies.

How much does it cost to self-publish a book in the UK?

Realistically from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand, depending mostly on editing depth and cover ambition. Fixed-price production packages, such as Librum's from €100 for ePUB or €300 for complete print plus digital production, make the file side predictable; editing scales with manuscript length.
